Yang Sing, Camelon, Falkirk.

What is it with us Scots? Why do we always think more is better? Is this the logic that we are adopting by the creeping growth in buffet nights at Chinese restaurants? What’s makes me pose these questions? Well, a while back I had the unfortunate experience to eat at the Yang Sing at Camelon, Falkirk. In short, it was one of the worst dining experiences that I have had the displeasure of experiencing in recent years.

When we walked in through the doors of the Yang Sing and I was astounded by the amount of people who were either seated or waiting to be so. To say this restaurant was full doesn't cut it. It was bursting at the seams. I've always reckoned you could tell a good restaurant by the amount of people that dine, but unfortunately this cannot be said for the Yang Sing. After a 15 minute wait we were taken to a bench style table that was designed to seat about 12 people. The waiter explained that the menu only consisted of "eat as much as you want" for £10.00. Mmmm, okay I thought.

So after placing our drinks order, up we strode along with the rest of the Falkirk population to queue in front of what all intents and purposes were feeding trough’s. We were confronted by what could only be described as an unappealing stodgy Chinese food mountain. The starters were three types of soup, pancake rolls and filling, spring rolls, and won tons. The spring rolls were veggie and were ever so slightly greasy. There were main dishes such as mushrooms in batter, chicken in its many forms, together with beef dishes, ribs, mixed vegetables and mushroom satay. There were also noodles, fried rice and the obligatory chips. The sauces include curry, sweet and sour and lemon sauce. If you were not satisfied by the this the you could gorge yourself on the sweets such as chocolate gateau, banana fritter, ice creams, fruits and cheesecake.

It sounds okay on paper, but all the dishes appeared to be mixed together, droplets of curry sauce was mixed in with the sweet and sour sauce. What would pass a vegetarian dish was partly mixed with meat dish. I will spare you further detail, but needless to say it was minging. It was like eating in an airport cafe. Terrible! It was just horrible.

We were in and out the restaurant in less than 30 minutes, never to return again. I suppose the buffet meal at the Yang Sing is ideal for people who can eat ‘til they drop! But for those of us who expect a tiny wee bit of finesse, better value and real choice I would advise you to dine elsewhere.

  4. Many thanks for taking the time to comment on the Yang Sing. The Buddha finds it rather strange that there a comments are about the service at the Yang Sing as it’s a self service buffet with limited service and interaction with the staff. Mmmmm. The "service" the Buddha received got was the slowest for sometime. The Buddha has had the good fortune to read a recent environmental health report on an inspection undertaken by Falkirk Council on the Yang Sing and it does not make pleasant reading. And he certainly won't be returning. But, everyone to their own and respect.

The Yang Sing was actually closed down temporarily by the Environmental Health Dept due to several violations. Unfortunately I ate a few times before that happened. But I soon got tired of always finding the food overcooked and dry or mushy and gross, depending on the dish. The "feeding trough" comment is a valid statement as well, the customers behind me at the serving line were practically pressing against me like I was holding them up from getting to the next nasty dish. I won't be going back!

i think you will actually find the yang sing was closed down temporarily due to innadequate training and supervision as well as a few other minor contraventions. im sure if you contact the environmental health they can confirm this for you. it was as someone pointed out in the newspaper but never at any point did it mention squirrel! why would they even consider using squirrel when im sure it would be a far more expensive alternative....seriously folks get real. everyone is entitled to their own opinion. im sure the yang sing have many fans but also many people who are not. buffets do not suit everyones taste or circumstances it is up to individuals to make their own choice. i personnally have had a mixture of experiences at the yang sing, some good and some not so good but what i will say whenever i have had any problems the staff have been fantastic in trying to resolve them. each person for their own but please folks enough with the rumours.

What a lolad of codswallop the Yang is fine and does what it says on the tin. I cannot believe the rumours about squirrels from brain dead morons are still doing the rounds. I know the owners and staff quite well there is no issue with hygene there nor is there anything other than proper food served. i have seen the kitchen and its better than most of the so-called luxury hotels in the area believe me on that one.

In response to the constant badgering by a waiter in the Yang Sing in Falkirk, who kept asking, "whadyouwannadrink?"
I asked for tap water just to annoy him. He said there was no tap water, only bottled (at about £2.60 a pop) I then asked why there was no tap water, he said the taps don't work, and that environmental health had said that the water was not safe to drink anyway. I then asked how they make soup, tea, coffe, etc. and how do they wash their dishes. He suddenly could speak no English.

Have eaten at Yang Sing on numerous occaisons and still alive. Just about to go there again, its a buffet, eat as much as you like, a wide selection of dishes and a salad bar for those who want the healthy option. Fresh fruit for afters although I prefer gateaux topped off with ice cream.

If you want service with a smile go elsewhere and pay for it. You get a better selection of dishes over weekend. Its not a la carte but neither is the price.

I was there today, we went in at 12.30pm and i must say the food was already dryed out. They must have started to cook the food about 10am, as the place only oped at 12pm. The staff where plesent enough but on another sad note, they dont seel drink now. I asked for a pint of lager, and was told they dont have a drinks license anymore. It's been a while since i was last in it ,so i dont know how long ago they lost there drinks license.

They lost their alcohol liceence due to immigration breaches. The licence was revoked on August 18 after the UK Borders Agency allegedly found illegal immigrants working there. The case is due in court soon and the restaurant could be forced to close or change owners.

I have eat in the yang sing falkirk for years, the service has always been great along with the food,i thought
but noticed quite a change over the past couple of months, staff wise, and a chef who hangs about the kitchen door looking out to the eaters, off putting and they are not filling up the food trays quick enough.
but just had a bad experiance on 14th May 2011,got food poisoning sat on the toilete pan for going on 3 daays now, usual stomach cramps pains etc
I must say i will not be back there again as this could have killed someone who was weak

Visited Yang Sing tonight, hadn't been there for over a year. Arrived at 8:30 on a Saturday evening and was surprised to find it quite empty, (but it is Halloween weekend). Empty trays didn't get filled so no King Prawn or Shredded Duck, and we couldn't get a steak meal from the menu. Coffee machine broken. Has got it's drinks licence back. Food was tasty, but arrive earlier for a wider choice.

First off I would like to say excellent blog! I had a quick question which I'd like to ask if you don't
mind. I was interested to know how you center yourself and clear your mind before
writing. I've had a hard time clearing my mind in getting my ideas out. I do take pleasure in writing however it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes are generally lost just trying to figure out how to begin. Any suggestions or hints? Many thanks!

I actually really enjoy the Yang Sing. All you can eat buffet for 13/14 quid depending when you go. At that price you're clearly not expecting 5 star food but what you go get is a decent standard. Good honest food. Possibly needs freshened up inside with the decoration but again what's there does the job.
